Isotonic Dextrose Saline

Brand Name given by Opso Saline is IDS
Isotonic Dextrose Saline are ideal for the replacement of Insensible fluid loss, as insensible fluid losses comprises by water loss and a very minimum of electrolyte loss -

What is Insensible fluid loss?

- Fluid loss that is not readily measured and consists mostly of water lost via evaporation through the
skin (two thirds) and respiratory tract (one third).

- Insensible fluid loss also depends on the postnatal age. Because skin thickness intensifies with the age,
the Insensible fluid loss decreases as premature neonates mature.

- Insensible fluid loss ventilated infants receive humidified gas. Therefore, Insensible fluid loss from the
lungs is eliminated in these infants.

IDS are also effective in case of sensible fluid loss -

What is Sensible fluid loss?

- Fluid loss that is measurable and consists of water & electrolyte lost via urine, stool (eg, diarrhea and
Cholera etc.), nasogastric or orogastric drainage and cerebrospinal fluid (eg, ventricular drainage)
